FIRST AID FOR MENTAL HEALTH.

LOOKING AFTER YOUR NUMBER 1 ASSET.

Mental health is how we think, feel and behave. We all have mental health.

However, one in four people in the UK will suffer with a mental health condition at some point in their lifetime and one in six employees experience common mental health problems in the workplace. Research has shown that work is the biggest cause of stress which can stop people performing at their best.

While mental health problems are common, most are mild, tend to be short term and can be successfully treated if picked up at the right stage.

In the workplace we have first aider's for physical injuries and fire wardens for fires. But, what about mental health, something we all have?

In fact, poor mental health costs businesses ten times more than physical accidents (£37.5 billion vs £3.5 billion).

A strong a resilient workforce is always the goal. But, the workforce needs looking after and a trained port of call to help.

Thats where First Aid For Mental Health comes in.

1 IN 4 PEOPLE WILL SUFFER WITH A MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEM AT SOME POINT IN THEIR LIFETIME.

WHAT IS FIRST AID FOR MENTAL HEALTH?

First aid for mental health is the initial support provided to a person experiencing a mental health problem until professional help is received or until the crisis is resolved.

The first aider is trained in how to recognise early signs and symptoms of mental ill health, start and engage in supportive conversations, assess risks and signpost while encouraging further professional support. All while protecting their own mental health.

Their key role is to be the main point of contact for anyone who is struggling while helping to reduce the stigma around mental health and encouraging an environment where people feel safe and comfortable to talk.

Simply having people with these skills in your business will change the way people think, feel and behave about mental health.

WHY HAVE FIRST AID FOR MENTAL HEALTH?

The statistics around mental health, its impact on employees and therefore its impact on the business speak for themselves.

The simple fact that mental health costs employers ten times more than physical accidents in the workplace, coupled with the research showing that work is the biggest cause of stress, which can stop people from performing at their best is justification alone.

However, why have first aiders for mental health?

In 2017, the UK Government commissioned Lord Stevenson and Paul Farmer (Chief Executive of Mind) to independently review the role employers can play to better support individuals with mental health conditions in the workplace.

The 'Thriving as Work' report sets out a framework of actions - called 'Core Standards' - that reviewers recommended employers of all sizes can and should put in place. The core standards have been designed to help employers improve the mental health of their workplace and enable individuals with mental health to thrive. The role of First Aid for Mental Health is a key part of this.
